SPECIAL ISSUE CALL FOR PAPERS: Media and Politics in Central and Eastern Europe

The International Journal of Press/Politics
Guest Editors: Paolo Mancini, Università di Perugia & Jan Zielonka, Oxford University

The rapid transition to democracy and market economy in Central and Eastern Europe has produced a curious, if not problematic, media landscape. Fuzzy ownership of the media, undefined laws and procedures, opaque imitation of external models, business parallelism, and a disoriented journalistic profession are some striking features of the evolving system. This special issue of The International Journal of Press/Politicswill map out and explain the structure and performance of the news media and their contribution to the consolidation of democracy. The following questions will be addressed: Which interpretive categories can be used in studying the relationship between media and politics in transitional democracies? Which historical legacies have shaped the post-communist media landscape and how? What is the impact of Western regulatory models on these countries? What is the role of local and foreign media moguls? How do the media react when confronted with political interference by state or party officials? Submissions from scholars from Central and Eastern Europe are particularly welcome.

Authors should submit papers using the online system (http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/ijpp). The deadline for submission is October 31, 2011. Submissions should not exceed 8,000 words including tables and bibliography. All submissions will be peer reviewed, and editors will select 5 or 6 articles for publication. The special issue is tentatively scheduled to be published in 2012.
